Review: 2025 MG IM6 Performance - Intelligent Mobility Arrives in Brisbane

Brisbane drivers are about to meet something genuinely new with the IM6 Performance.

While MG has already made its mark in the mainstream EV space, this model comes from IM Motors: an premium EV brand in China led by SAIC (in joint venture with Alibaba), the same global powerhouse behind MG.

For Australia, SAIC has rebranded these flagship models under "IM presented by MG Motor", giving local buyers their first proper taste of what the parent company can do when it aims higher up the market.

And you can feel that difference straight away.

The IM6 Performance isn't an MG with fancy badges, but a bigger, more advanced, more tech-heavy SUV built to compete well outside MG's usual lane.

    First Impressions

The IM6 is a sizeable SUV - 4904mm long, wide and planted - but it doesn't feel over the top.

The clean surfaces, frameless doors and full-length glass roof give it a modern, almost European look.

It's the kind of design that fits naturally into Brisbane's mix of suburban driveways and city carparks without trying to shout for attention.

Inside is where this new premium direction becomes obvious.

The dashboard features a huge 26.3-inch horizontal display running from the driver to the centre, with a second 10.5-inch screen handling most vehicle controls.

Now, having almost everything run through a screen can take a moment to adjust to, especially if you're used to traditional MG models, but the layout is logical and the system responds quickly.

Once you set up your shortcuts and favourites, it becomes second nature.

The materials are a clear step up from MG's mainstream models. Quilted synthetic leather feels supportive, and the seats offer heating, cooling, memory and massage.

The cabin stays quiet thanks to double-glazed windows and active noise cancellation, which is something you usually don't see at this price point. The 20-speaker audio system is a genuinely premium inclusion, and the animated digital car on the cluster - showing your indicators, braking and more - adds a bit of playful tech that helps the whole system feel alive without being gimmicky.

If I had to nitpick, the second screen on the centre console can feel a bit "deep" in menus during your first few days with the car. On the other hand, the IM6 lets you save custom shortcuts to the steering wheel scroll wheel, which solves the problem once you've personalised it.

    Performance, Range & Charging

Under the skin, the IM6 Performance is far more serious than its calm demeanour suggests.

The dual-motor AWD setup pushes out 572kW and 802Nm, making it one of the most powerful SUVs you can buy under six figures. The official 0-100km/h time is 3.4 seconds, which puts it right in the conversation with brands that cost considerably more.

Of course, most Brisbane drivers aren't buying an EV like this to launch off the line every morning. What matters day-to-day is that the car always feels effortless.

Merging onto the M1 or accelerating up the Pacific Motorway on-ramp takes barely any thought. It's immediate and smooth, and it does it without any drama.

The 100kWh NCM battery offers a WLTP range of 505km, which comfortably covers weekly commuting between Brisbane, Logan, Redlands or Ipswich with room to spare.

And when you do plug in, the 800V architecture means fast charging is properly fast. The IM6 supports up to 396kW DC, putting in among the fastest-charging EVs in Australia, with a 30-80% top-up possible in about 15 minutes on the right charger.

The Digital Chassis - Where IM Steps Into the Future

One of the biggest differences between the IM6 and other premium EVs is its digital chassis.

Most cars still work with separate mechanical systems handling steering, suspension and braking. The IM6 doesn't.

Instead, it uses an NVIDIA Orin processor and more than 3000 semiconductors to coordinate everything in real time. Rear-wheel steering, adaptive damping, brake-by-wire and traction management all work together, constantly predicting and correcting before the driver ever notices.

The result is an SUV that feels surprisingly composed, even on the lumpy bits of Logan Road or the patched sections around West End.

Brisbane gets its fair share of sudden storms, too - and the way the IM6 manages grip changes on wet roads makes the drive feel relaxed rather than tense.

There is one area worth calling out honestly: the rear visibility from the traditional mirror isn't great.

But IM has built a simple workaround where a quick flick of the steering wheel toggle brings up a live camera view on the main screen.

Once you start using it, it becomes second nature.

    Everyday Practicality in Brisbane

Despite the tech-heavy personality, the IM6 is still very much a family-friendly SUV.

The rear seats are spacious, with plenty of room for adults and kids, and the glass roof brings in heaps of light without letting heat pour in, and that’s a big win for Queensland summers.

Boot space sits at 646 litres in the Performance model, with a 32-litre frunk up front. It easily fits school bags, sports gear, or a week's shopping from Garden City or Carindale.

Drop the seats and you get over 1600 litres, which is ideal if you're doing a Bunnings run or loading up for a weekend away.

The rear-wheel steering also deserves another mention here: parking at Westfield, Howard Smith Wharves, or older city carparks is genuinely easier. The IM6 can navigate tight ramps and narrow bays with a turning circle that feels more like a medium hatchback than a five-metre SUV.

The V2L (vehicle-to-load) function is another handy inclusion. It lets you power devices directly from the car - great for picnics, camping, or even keeping a laptop charged if you're working remotely.

    Safety & Driver Assistance

The IM6 is packed with high-end safety tech, including a full suite of cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors.

Lane support, blind-spot cameras, driver monitoring and emergency braking all come standard.

Rainy Night Mode brightens camera feeds in poor weather, which is handy during Queensland's late-summer downpours.

There's one small catch: some of the audible safety alerts can be a bit eager. But there's also a shortcut to disable them each time you start the car, which softens the annoyance.

Ownership, Warranty & Support Through Motorama MG

IM6 models are covered by up to seven years of vehicle warranty, with an 8-year/160,000km high-voltage battery warranty and capped price servicing for 5 years/100,000km (12-month/20,000 intervals).

Exact warranty terms depend on servicing through the MG/IM network, so it's worth confirming with our sales staff on the latest details when you step into the showroom.

Being supported locally by Motorama MG means you're dealing with a Brisbane team that knows SAIC, MG and now IM products inside out.

And if you're new to EVs entirely, having a dealership that can walk you through charging, software, home setup, and ownership is a genuinely valuable part of the experience.

    Pricing, Options & Value

In Queensland, the IM6 range is sharply positioned considering the level of tech and performance on offer. The IM6 Premium starts at $60,990 drive-away, the mid-spec Platinum comes in at $67,990 drive-away, and the flagship Performance sits at $77,990 drive-away. Optional extras include premium paint colours (around $1,000 depending on the shade) and the Dover Beige interior for an additional $990.

Charging accessories aren't bundled in, so if you want a V2L cable ($250) or Type 2 AC charging cables (from $299 to $399), you'll factor those in as well.

Even fully optioned, the IM6 undercuts many of the premium EV SUVs it competes with in Brisbane, making the range surprisingly attainable for buyers stepping into the luxury EV space.

Final Thoughts - Should You Test Drive the IM6 Performance?

The IM6 Performance is a significant step for the brand. It feels modern, thoughtful and genuinely premium, with the kind of driving tech you normally expect from much more expensive EVs. It's spacious, fast, comfortable, and it brings a new flavour to the electric SUV market - especially for Brisbane buyers wanting something high-tech but still practical for everyday life.

If you've ever been interested in EVs but weren't sold on the usual options - or you're simply curious about this new IM sub-brand - the IM6 is absolutely worth seeing for yourself.

Come into Motorama MG and take it for a drive on local roads. That's when the tech, the refinement, and the effortless performance really make sense.
