A warning light appears on the motorway and the first question is usually: can I keep driving?
Stop as soon as it is safe for an oil-pressure warning, overheating, serious brake symptoms, smoke or burning smells, severe vibration or major power loss. Keep control of the vehicle; stopping safely does not mean braking abruptly in traffic. holden warning lights blog cont...
Read the icon, exact display message and vehicle behaviour together. Colour alone is not enough: a red seatbelt reminder is different from an oil-pressure warning. Your exact Holden model and year's owner handbook controls the action, not a universal dashboard chart. If you cannot identify the warning, stop somewhere safe and get advice.
Pull over safely and switch off. Oil pressure keeps moving engine parts lubricated; a pressure warning is not simply an oil-level or oil-change reminder. A normal dipstick level does not prove that pressure is safe. Do not keep driving or restart just to see whether it clears.
Stop safely and follow the message and handbook's shutdown procedure. This is different from a routine temperature display. Some Holden instructions include a brief idle before switching off, so follow your specific procedure rather than guessing. Never open a hot radiator or coolant pressure cap.
A parking-brake reminder can be straightforward. A brake-system warning that remains after releasing the parking brake needs immediate attention. Stop and seek assistance, particularly with a soft pedal, longer stopping distances, grinding, pulling or a leak. Sudden heavy or unpredictable steering also warrants a safe stop.
Stop safely even without a warning light. Do not push through to get home. Switch off once stopped and arrange assistance. If you suspect fire, move everyone to safety and call Triple Zero (000).
A steady check-engine or malfunction indicator light needs diagnosis.
It is not automatically harmless because the car still drives normally. Arrange prompt advice; continue only where the handbook permits and there are no serious symptoms.
A flashing malfunction light while the engine is running deserves more urgent attention.
Depending on the model, it can indicate a fault that could damage the catalytic converter. Ease off the accelerator, avoid hard acceleration and move to a safe stopping place for advice. Severe shaking, overheating or major power loss means stop safely rather than driving to the workshop.
Do not try to clear it by driving harder. Also, flashing does not mean the same thing for every symbol: a flashing traction-control indicator can mean the system is actively intervening, not that the engine is faulty.
The battery-shaped light can mean the battery is not being charged, rather than simply needing replacement. Treat it as urgent. For example, the MY18 Colorado handbook directs drivers to stop and switch off if this warning appears while running. Do not assume a longer drive will recharge it.
A persistent restraint-system fault warning needs prompt inspection because airbags or seatbelt tensioners may not operate correctly. Do not put it off until the next routine service.
Conventional braking may remain with an ABS fault, but anti-lock assistance may not. That does not automatically make continued driving appropriate: the MY18 Colorado handbook instructs a careful stop and engine shutdown for an ABS warning while driving. A steady stability fault can mean assistance is unavailable. Follow the handbook and arrange inspection; changed braking or steering moves the situation into the stop-safe group. Facebook
Holden's official Trailblazer and Colorado guidance includes a specific diesel particulate filter (DPF) sequence:
This is a model-specific instruction, not permission to keep driving after any diesel warning. Match your model, year and message to the handbook. Once service is required, do not substitute another attempted cleaning drive. Serious symptoms or unsafe conditions override any plan to finish a drive cycle.
Stop somewhere safe and check your tyres and tyre pressures promptly. A low-pressure warning may indicate a puncture; do not continue motorway driving without checking. Rapid deflation, visible damage or changed handling means stop safely and seek help.
A sensor-system fault is different, but still needs attention; do not assume it explains away low pressure. Low fuel and washer-fluid reminders also need resolving, although they are not normally instructions to shut down the engine immediately. holden warning lights blog cont...
Queensland Government guidance recommends:
Do not attempt roadside repairs or walk along the motorway.
