Understanding CTP Insurance
Are you in the know when it comes to CTP insurance? If not, our guide will get you up to scratch.
WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?
CTP is an acronym for Compulsory Third Party (Insurance). Essentially, it legally covers the owner and whoever is driving the owner’s car in the unfortunate event that someone is injured by the vehicle.
The Queensland Government has made CTP Insurance a compulsory part of registering your vehicle and Police as well as Traffic Cameras are now able to tell whether your vehicle is insured by using automatic number plate camera technology as opposed to checking the colourful sticker (which you don't need anymore!)
WHY IS IT IN PLACE?
The CTP is designed to cover you and any drivers of your car for legal liability in the event that the vehicle registered in your name injures another person. It will also assist you, if you are injured by someone’s car.
Compulsory Third Party Insurance is designed to cover you from compensation claims from anyone who is injured or otherwise affected in an accident that's your fault.
WHO CAN PROVIDE ME WITH CTP INSURANCE?
The QLD Government provides a list of licensed CTP insurers available in Queensland, but you can also find the list on the back of your vehicle registration form and ask the team at Motorama.
There are only two options when it comes to premiums, depending on whether you are eligible to an Input Tax Credit on their vehicle or not. One is for drivers who are entitled to claim an ITC and the other for those who are not entitled to claim an ITC.
CAN I SWITCH?
You don't have to wait until your rego is due to switch CTP providers. You canswitch online on the Department of Transport & Main Roads website, or alternatively call the insurance company that you want to switch to – and they'll do it for you so that when your rego renewal notice comes around, you're automatically switched to your new provider – sometimes companies provide you with extra cover or promotional deals for switching insurers, so shop around.
