Fuel Excise Halved: What Brisbane Drivers Need to Know

Australian drivers could soon see some relief at the bowser, with the Australian National Cabinet announcing today that the fuel excise on petrol and diesel will be halved for three months to help ease the rising cost of fuel.
According to RACQ, current fuel prices across Greater Brisbane are sitting at an average of 250.5 cents per litre for regular unleaded and 306.5 cents per litre for diesel - figures that have left many drivers feeling the pinch [source: RACQ].
Brisbane is no stranger to high fuel costs. In 2025, RACQ reported Brisbane to have the highest average priced Regular Unleaded Petrol (RULP) compared to all other capital cities, at 185.2cpl [source: RACQ]. Clayfield topped the list at 200.0cpl, a price that now feels relatively low compared to what we’re seeing at the bowser today.
The temporary excise reduction is expected to lower fuel prices by 26.3 cents per litre, which would reduce the cost of filling a 65-litre tank by almost $19 [source: Australian Government]. While not a long-term solution, the move is expected to provide some short-term relief for households and businesses navigating ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
The reduction will be in effect from April 1 through to June 30, giving motorists a three-month window of lower fuel costs.
To ensure the savings are passed on to consumers, the ACCC has also been tasked with increasing fuel price monitoring. Petrol stations found to be price gouging during this period may face on-the-spot fines, aimed at ensuring drivers genuinely benefit from the excise reduction.
While fuel prices remain unpredictable, this temporary measure may offer some welcome breathing room for Brisbane drivers, even if only for a limited time.
