Review: 2023 MG MG5 Vibe

The MG5 is MG's latest model to hit Australian shores and the first sedan on offer from the brand.

Styled as a sports sedan, the MG5 is a sleek package that forgoes a busy suite of technology for a minimalist approach that allows MG to undercut the competition significantly and offer the model at an exceptionally affordable price.

We recently spent some time with the base trim, Vibe, getting to know the new model and seeing how it handles on the streets of Brisbane.

Initial Impressions

The MG5 features a modern silhouette that belies its budget price point to fit the sports sedan description with aggressive lines, sharp headlights, dual exhausts, and an elegant, fastback-style rear end.

The sporty styling continues on the interior with sharp design elements that utilise sleek materials like synthetic leather seats and a modernised digital instrument cluster.

Driveability

The MG5 is available in two trim levels that interestingly feature two different drivetrains with the base model, Vibe, that we tested being offered with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a CVT transmission. The engine on the upper trim, Essence, comes with the same displacement and number of cylinders, yet receives a power and torque boost thanks to the inclusion of a turbocharger. The Essence also features a more sports-focused 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The MG5 features dynamic handling, and pleasing levels of responsiveness and comfort resulting in an enjoyable driving experience. The base model is by no means quick, yet it still feels remarkably driver-focused and you'll find yourself focusing on cornering with a little more precision than usual. The digital instrument cluster also features a few different driving-oriented screens to complete the experience.

Liveability

The infotainment system on the MG5 is quite minimal with MG opting to rely on the popular Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technologies. These are handled through the crisp, 10-inch touchscreen.

You can maintain peace of mind with the suite of safety features that includes autonomous emergency braking, emergency brake assist, electronic stability control, and active corner braking. You've also got a tyre pressure monitoring system so you're notified before driving on a compromised tyre.

Cost

Pricing is where the MG5 makes its mark in contrast to its competitors with both model trims coming in under $30,000 drive away even if you opt for one of the metallic paint options. You can get the base trim Vibe that was driven for this review from Motorama MG for $24,990 drive away, which beats out all other competitors in the segment, while the upper trim, Essence, is available for $28,990 drive away. Both trims come complete with a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty and the choice of Dover White or Royal Yellow exterior paint at no extra cost. Another four metallic paint options are available for an extra $700.

Conclusion

Overall, MG has done an exceptional job at maximising the savings in the MG5. The brand has developed a modern sedan focused on simplicity and reliability that will appeal to many buyers that, at the end of the day, are just looking to get the best deal possible. The MG5 includes a respectable range of features despite its low cost and if you opt for the upper trim you can even expect a little bit of zip.
