Pollen Filters Explained

Posted by Motorama in Servicing Tips

Whether you suffer from seasonal allergies or simply prefer the air in your car to remain fresh and clear, a pollen filter can be an invaluable accessory.

What does it do?

The pollen filter (sometimes called a cabin filter) is often put in as a bullet point on the specifications sheet for cars; an afterthought for what people will want in their cars.

The pollen filter helps to remove contaminants from coming in through the air vents – like exhaust fumes from the car in front, dust and dirt on a track or, as the name suggests, pollen flying around during allergy season.

This helps to protect you and your passengers from the bulk of the pollutants and allergens that come with sitting amongst other cars or even off-road where dust and pollen can make your adventure uncomfortable and unpleasant if you have a condition like asthma or hayfever.

Why do I need to change it?

Of course, over time, the pollen filter will build up and get clogged with dirt and grime and – because it’s a part of the air conditioning system – will cause your car to smell musty and prevent proper airflow into the cabin.

This means that it’s important to replace your filter every so often to ensure that it’s still working together with your car. Usually manufacturers ask that you replace it every two years, although this can be sooner if you live in a heavily polluted city, or do a lot of driving around cars with dirty exhausts (often in the city, or if you commute on a road with a lot of trucks) or on dusty unsealed roads.

How often does it need replacement?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing your cabin filter at least every 2 years. This could be more often if you live in highly polluted areas or drive in the city. If you drive a lot on unsealed roads or commute on roads with lots of trucks you may also need to get your filter changed sooner.

When the weather is cooler, this is usually the ideal time to replace your pollen filter. With the warmer weather comes an influx of pollen and allergens. Changing out your filter in Winter will have you prepared when Spring and Summer come around.

Who can replace it for me?

While it isn’t usually covered by capped price servicing, replacing the filter is often an easy job that can be done as an addition to your scheduled service without too much of a hassle for the service technician – although you can check with your service advisor the specific costs to get a pollen filter replaced.

If you aren't sure where to start, or if you prefer to leave your vehicle in the hands of Brisbane car servicing experts, the team at Motorama can also check and change your filters as part of a routine car servicing.

Regularly maintaining your air filters can ensure your drive is as comfortable as possible, and that air circulates freely within your car. It is also an important detail to look after to ensure your car continues to run efficiently.
