Turning Left on a Red Light in Queensland is here!

Posted by Motorama in Motoring Tips

In what is a debatably positive move, Brisbane is currently trialling left turns through red lights at five intersections throughout the South-East.

The system has already been successfully implemented throughout North America and Europe as well as select locations in New South Wales and South Australia. The system was also trialled on the Gold Coast starting in April this year, with as yet unknown results.

So heads up Queensland, if you’re out on the road and someone turns left on the red light in front of you, don’t panic-they may well be within their rights. Keep an eye out for the signs which will be located just below the signals themselves and state, “Left turn on red permitted after stopping”.

The five locations are as follows;

  • Left turn from Bowen Street into Lutwyche Road, Windsor;
  • Left turn from Maud Street into Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead;
  • Left turn from Hellawell Road into Gowan Road, Sunnybank Hills;
  • Left turn from Edge Street into Creek Road, Murrarie; and
  • Left turn from Spence Street into Broadwater Road, Wishart.

The trial will run until May next year where its effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion will be evaluated.
