4WD Driver Awareness Program

Recently a few new Motorama 4x4xMORE staff members joined forces with the Mitsubishi 4WD Club of Queensland to participate in their 4WD Driver Awareness Program. Through completing a theoretical & several practical exercises in a true off-road environment, they are now equipped with specific training, ensuring that they will be ready to help out on any future 4x4xMORE adventures!

Weekend Training

Over the course of an entire weekend, the new staff members of our Motorama 4x4xMORE team had to complete a series of exercises to build out their 4WD capabilities. These were paired with plenty of instructions, theoretical knowledge and practice rounds.

The experienced teachers from the Mitsubishi 4WD Club of Queensland try to relay as much as their knowledge as possible, whilst it's equally important to put this into action. That's why they set up a range of practical tests, making it a real world experience.

Practical Exercises

The first exercise on the program was actually not a planned one. To get to the training grounds we had to conquer a hill, which required us to put our vehicles into low range - the first test to see if you know how your 4WD actually works.

At the training grounds, the first actual test was one where we had to navigate onto wooden blocks, practising wheel placement. It teaches you how to control your vehicle, brake and throttle, at slow speeds and to pick the right line when actually driving over tricky, rocky terrain.  Sometimes when you are traversing tight tracks, correct tyre placement can be the difference between making it or getting stuck.

Next up we had to place our vehicles as close as possible to some witches hats.  The idea here was to show we know the size of our vehicles, and where the tailgate or bull bar is, to correctly manoeuvre them.

Safety

As always, safety is an important factor when 4WD'ing, so there was a special focus on how to safely do a recovery. We where shown how to use the gear correctly, how to communicate properly during a recovery and we also got to experience first hand how it feels to recover, and how to be recovered.

Another interesting aspect was how to back up if an obstacle cannot be tackled in the first go. There are a few essential steps that need to be followed when reversing on a hill for example.
